EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Brassy Chub, Kyphosus vaigiensis, also known as the Black Chub, Marciac's Chub, or the Arara Serrano. The Brassy Chub is a vibrant, tropical marine fish that belongs to the Kyphosidae family, which is also known as the Chubs or Porgies. This particular specimen is illustrated in its adult form, displaying its distinctive black and gold colouring. The engraving was created in 1837 as part of Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator, Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is considered one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and exceptional artistic skill. The Brassy Chub is a popular target for recreational fishing and is often mistakenly identified as a Black Grouper or a Black Bonito. It is commonly found in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, and its diet consists mainly of plankton and small invertebrates. The Brassy Chub is also an important food source for larger marine predators, such as the Mycteroperca serranus, or the Caribbean Grouper, and the Serranus serranus, or the Caribbean Sea Bass. This beautiful engraving not only showcases the intricate details of the Brassy Chub's appearance but also highlights the exceptional artistry and craftsmanship of the 19th-century scientific illustration process. The use of stipple engraving, a technique that involves the application of tiny dots to create shading and texture, adds depth and dimension to the image, making it a true masterpiece of natural history art.
