EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured lithograph depicts Cardinal Joseph Fesch, a prominent diplomat and uncle to Napoleon Bonaparte, dressed in his ecclesiastical robes as Prince of France. Born in 1763 in Ajaccio, Corsica, Fesch rose through the ranks of the Catholic Church, becoming a bishop in 1801 and a cardinal in 1803. He served as the French ambassador to the Holy See from 1801 to 1804 and played a crucial role in arranging the papal coronation of Napoleon as Emperor of the French in 1804. Fesch's influence extended beyond the Church and diplomacy, as he was also a close advisor to Napoleon and a trusted confidant. He was instrumental in the negotiations for the Concordat of 1801 between France and the Holy See, which established the relationship between the two powers for the next century. The cardinal's grand attire is on full display in this image, with his red robes adorned with gold trim and ermine fur. The cross and other ecclesiastical insignia add to the sense of power and authority. The intricate details of the lithograph, produced by the renowned French publisher Le Bibliophile Jacob under the direction of Paul Lacroix, capture the opulence and grandeur of the time. Cardinal Fesch's legacy as a diplomat and uncle to Napoleon continues to be studied by historians, shedding light on the complex political landscape of the early 19th century. This image offers a glimpse into the world of the Prince of France and the ecclesiastical robes of one of the most influential figures of his time.
