The Persistent Pigeon and the Determined Aviator
EDITORS COMMENTS
This delightfully humorous comic postcard from the 20th century, published by the renowned British satirical illustrator Donald McGill, depicts a man in an aviator's uniform, complete with goggles, hat, and scarf, standing in front of a school of aviation. The man, with a look of annoyance on his face, is surrounded by a flock of pigeons, each one perched on various aeroplanes and biplanes behind him. The man seems to be giving a lecture, perhaps teaching a class on flying, as indicated by the chalkboard in the background with the words "Learn to Fly" written on it. The pigeons, however, appear to have other plans. One pigeon, in particular, is seen retaliating against the man, dropping a large, menacing-looking book on his head. The man, although clearly annoyed, can't help but smile and chuckle at the situation. Another pigeon, holding an umbrella, seems to be shielding a plane from the rain, while yet another is perched on the wing of an aeroplane, seemingly ready to take off. This comical scene is a perfect example of McGill's unique ability to capture the absurdity and humor in everyday situations. The use of pigeons as the source of annoyance and retaliation adds an extra layer of amusement, making this postcard a fun and lighthearted addition to any collection.
