The Anglo-Spanish War had been raging for over a decade, and Drake, leading a fleet of English ships, had set his sights on the wealthy Spanish colony. As the English forces stormed the city, they encountered fierce resistance from the Spanish defenders, who had barricaded themselves within the walls. The print shows the moment of breakthrough, as English soldiers surge forward, their guns at the ready, to overcome the barricade. The scene is one of brutal conflict, with the lifeless bodies of Spanish soldiers and civilians scattered on the ground, and opposing soldiers frantically running to engage the attackers.
