EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts the European yew tree, Taxus baccata, a magnificent and historically significant species native to Europe and western Asia. The illustration is taken from Jussieus Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), who is considered one of the greatest botanical artists of the 19th century. The European yew tree is an evergreen conifer that can reach up to 20 meters in height. Its leaves are small, needle-like, and arranged in clusters. The tree is dioecious, meaning that male and female flowers grow on separate trees. The female tree produces red, fleshy arils that surround the seeds, which are often referred to as "yew nuts." The European yew tree has a rich history, with many uses in various cultures. The wood of the tree was used for making longbows, as it is flexible and strong. The tree was also used in traditional medicine, with the bark being used to treat various ailments, including heart conditions and cancer. The European yew tree is also home to several interesting epiphytes, such as the Aristolochia sypho and the Dutchman's pipe, Macrophylla. The Aristolochia sypho, also known as the pipevine, is a parasitic plant that grows on the European yew tree and produces large, pipe-like structures that attract flies for pollination. The Dutchman's pipe, Macrophylla, is a climbing plant that produces beautiful, tubular flowers that are used in traditional medicine. This beautiful and intricately detailed engraving is a testament to the skill and artistry of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin and the importance of botanical illustration in documenting and preserving the natural world.
