EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph showcases four exquisite swallowtail butterflies: the Fluminense swallowtail (Papilio fluminensis), Parides ascanius, Anteros acheus, and Parides agavus. The image is taken from John O. Westwood's new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn, London, in 1837. The Fluminense swallowtail, depicted in the lower left corner, is a large and vibrant butterfly native to South America. Its upper wings are a rich orange-red with black markings, while the underwings display intricate patterns of blue, green, and orange. The Parides ascanius, shown in the upper left corner, is a small and delicate butterfly with iridescent blue wings adorned with black markings. This species is currently classified as vulnerable due to habitat loss and fragmentation. The Anteros acheus, depicted in the upper right corner, is a beautiful swallowtail with upper wings that are a deep blue with black markings and a yellow border. The underwings are a striking yellow with black veins and spots. The Parides agavus, displayed in the lower right corner, is a large and impressive swallowtail with bright green upper wings and a yellow border. Its underwings are a striking combination of orange, black, and white. This intricately detailed lithograph, produced in the 19th century, showcases the breathtaking beauty and diversity of these swallowtail butterflies. The handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the already stunning designs, making this a truly remarkable piece of natural history art.
