EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: A Gentleman Fencer in the Act of Making a Return Thrust in Tierce This image showcases a gentleman fencer in the midst of an intense duel, expertly executing a return thrust in the fencing technique known as tierce. The engraving, created as an afterpiece from an original illustration by Thomas Rowlandson, is taken from Domenico Angelo's renowned fencing manual, "The School of Fencing," published in London in 1787. The fencer, clad in the elegant attire of the era, stands poised and determined, his eyes locked onto his opponent's. He holds a sword in his right hand, its blade glinting menacingly under the light. In his left hand, he wields a dagger, or poignard, which he has just used to parry his adversary's attack. The parry, a skillful deflection of the opponent's blade, has left the poignard in a guarded position, ready for the next move. The gentleman fencer now makes his return thrust, aiming for his adversary's vital points. The tierce is a complex and versatile fencing technique, where the fencer shifts the sword from the on-guard position to a diagonal guard, allowing for a powerful and swift attack. The fencer's body is twisted slightly to the side, his weight shifted to his back foot, as he prepares to deliver the decisive blow. The intricate details of the engraving, produced using the copperplate process, reveal the finesse and artistry of the craft. The image is a testament to the elegance and skill required in the gentle art of swordplay, as practiced by the gentry of the time. Whether for the study of historical fencing techniques or as a decorative piece, this image is a must-have for any collection.
