EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph taken in 1885, Jumbo the African elephant is seen gracefully feeding in the lush gardens of the Zoological Society in Regent's Park, London. At the time, Jumbo was the star attraction of the zoo, drawing in crowds from all over the city and beyond. His massive size and gentle demeanor made him a beloved figure among visitors. Jumbo, whose name means "great" in Swahili, was the largest elephant in the world at the time of his arrival in Europe. He had been captured in Africa and brought to England in 1880, where he quickly became a sensation. The elephant's popularity continued to grow, and in 1882, he was purchased by the famous American showman P.T. Barnum for a reported sum of £10,000. Despite the excitement surrounding Jumbo's impending departure for America, the elephant remained in London for several more years. During his time at the zoo, he became a beloved figure in the community, and his daily feeding sessions were a must-see event for visitors. In this photograph, Jumbo can be seen reaching out with his long, powerful trunk to pluck branches from a tree, demonstrating his incredible agility and dexterity. The serene expression on his face and the gentle curve of his massive ears convey a sense of calm and intelligence that only added to his popularity. As Jumbo continued to captivate audiences in both Europe and America, he became a symbol of the wonder and mystery of the natural world. His legacy as one of the most famous elephants in history continues to inspire awe and admiration to this day.
