The Duchess, who was the wife of Sir Gilbert Kniveton, is shown in the image draped in a shroud, lying atop an ornate altar-tomb. Lady Frances Kniveton was a remarkable figure in history. Born in India as Coya, the daughter of a Persian merchant and a Turkish secretary, she later married Sir Gilbert Kniveton, an Englishman who served as an ambassador in the court of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan.
