EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts the Narrow-leaved Lungwort, Pulmonaria angustifolia, also known as the blue cowslip. The illustration is taken from Jussieus Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, a comprehensive dictionary of natural sciences published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. The illustration was drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), and engraved by Devegni. Turpin is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and ability to capture the intricacies of plants with exceptional accuracy. This particular illustration showcases the Narrow-leaved Lungwort's narrow, lobed leaves, which are arranged in a rosette at the base of the plant. The flowers, which appear in early spring, are blue or purple and have a distinctive bell shape. The Narrow-leaved Lungwort is a perennial herb that grows in damp, shady areas and is native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia. It was once used as a medicinal plant, with the leaves and roots being used to treat respiratory ailments, and the plant was believed to have the ability to cure jaundice. The illustration also features several other aquatic plants, including Water Lettuce (Pistia stratiotes), Cabbage Nile (Stratiotes aloides), and possibly other species. These plants add to the overall beauty of the composition and highlight the artist's skill in depicting a diverse range of plant life. This exquisite illustration provides a glimpse into the rich history of botany and the remarkable talent of one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century.
