EDITORS COMMENTS
This handcoloured copperplate engraving by Roberto Freschi, taken from Giulio Ferrario's Ancient and Modern Costumes of all the Peoples of the World, published in Florence, Italy in 1843, depicts the Nomadic Giagas or Gallas, a fierce and warlike people from Sierra Leone. The Giagas or Gallas were known for their destructive raids against neighboring kingdoms, including the Kingdom of Benguela in Angola. In the image, the Giagas or Gallas are shown armed with their traditional weapons: spears, shields, and cudgels. The spears, with their distinctive curved tips, were used for both hunting and warfare. The shields, made from wood and covered in animal hides, provided protection from enemy attacks. The cudgels, or clubs, were used for close combat. The Giagas or Gallas were a nomadic people, moving from place to place in search of water and pasture for their livestock. Their lifestyle made them formidable opponents, as they were able to quickly and easily mobilize their forces and launch surprise attacks on their enemies. Despite their reputation as fierce warriors, the Giagas or Gallas also had a rich cultural heritage. They were known for their intricate body scarification, which was used to mark important milestones in their lives, such as the onset of puberty and the achievement of warrior status. They also had a complex social structure, with a hierarchical system of chieftaincy and a strong sense of community. The Giagas or Gallas continue to be an important part of the cultural heritage of Sierra Leone and Angola, and their legacy can be seen in the traditional arts, music, and folklore of these countries. This engraving provides a fascinating glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the lives of these remarkable people and the world they inhabited.
