EDITORS COMMENTS
Step back in time with this evocative photograph of the George Public House on Fenchurch Street in London, as it looked in the 1960s. The main image captures the interior corridor of the pub, with its worn wooden floorboards, peeling wallpaper, and dimly lit atmosphere. The air of nostalgia is heightened by the absence of modern conveniences and the hustle and bustle of the 21st century. The George Public House, located in the heart of the City of London, was once a popular watering hole for local workers and office employees. The pub, which was owned by Hoare and Company Limited (not to be confused with the banking institution of the same name), had a rich history that dates back to at least the 19th century. However, the George, like many historic buildings in the area, was not immune to the ravages of time. In the 1980s, a devastating office fire gutted the building, forcing the pub to close its doors. It was later replaced by The Pumphouse, which now stands on the site. This photograph, taken in 1965, offers a rare glimpse into the past, providing a window into a bygone era of public houses and London life. The back of the print includes important details, such as the photographer ID for the George, Fenchurch Street, London EC3M 4BE, and the date of the photograph. This image is a must-have for anyone with an interest in London history, social history, or pub culture.
