EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored copperplate engraving showcases an intriguing assortment of spiders from the Wunderkammer or Cabinet of Curiosities owned by Dr. Christoph Jacob Trew and P.L. Muller in the late 18th century. Among the depicted specimens are various tarantulas and wolf spiders. At the center, the Pinktoe Tarantula (Avicularia avicularia) takes the spotlight, with its distinctive pink toes and elongated legs. This Italian species of tarantula is known for its vibrant coloration and relatively small size compared to other tarantulas. Surrounding the Pinktoe Tarantula are several Italian wolf spiders (Lycosa spp.), which are not true tarantulas but are often mistakenly referred to as tarantulas due to their large size and venomous bite. These spiders are agile hunters and possess impressive camouflage abilities, helping them blend in with their surroundings. In the bottom right corner, two venomous spiders from Curacao are depicted. Although their identification is uncertain, their inclusion in this collection highlights the fascination with exotic and rare specimens during the time. This engraving, taken from Georg Wolfgang Knorr's Deliciae Naturae Selectae, is a testament to the curiosity and scientific exploration of the natural world during the Age of Enlightenment. The intricate details and vibrant colors bring these fascinating creatures to life, allowing us to appreciate their beauty and uniqueness even centuries later.
