EDITORS COMMENTS
A Spectacle of Polar Wonders: Polar Bears at the London Hippodrome, January 1910 This photograph transports us back in time to the winter of 1910, when the London Hippodrome played host to an extraordinary event. Seventy polar bears, the stars of the show, had been transported from the Arctic to take part in the theatre's Christmas water spectacular, titled "The Arctic." The image showcases fifty of these magnificent creatures as they plunge into the flooded arena from replica icebergs, while the remaining bears roam about a deserted ship. The Hippodrome, renowned for its water shows, was a hub of entertainment and wonder. The arena filled with water, creating a mesmerizing spectacle for the audiences. The polar bears, transported in seven massive steel cages, caused quite a sensation as they made their way through central London, drawing crowds of curious onlookers. The polar bears' arrival was an unusual and bizarre sight for Londoners, who were not accustomed to seeing such creatures in their city. The Arctic spectacle was a testament to the Hippodrome's commitment to providing unique and captivating performances. However, the welfare of the animals was a matter of concern, with debates surrounding the ethics of transporting and performing wild animals for public entertainment. Despite the controversies, the polar bears' performance at the London Hippodrome remains an intriguing chapter in the history of entertainment. This photograph offers a glimpse into a bygone era, where the wonders of the natural world took center stage in the heart of the city.
