EDITORS COMMENTS
Scrap, Peoples of the World - Sandwich Islander (19th century) This 19th-century photograph captures the essence of traditional Sandwich Islander attire, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Polynesian people. The Sandwich Islands, now known as Hawaii, have a long and complex history, with a unique blend of indigenous and foreign influences. The Sandwich Islander in this image is adorned in a traditional costume, which includes a helmet-like headpiece made of feathers and other natural materials. The helmet serves both as a protective shield and a symbol of status and rank. The islander also holds a spear, a weapon that was once an essential tool for hunting and warfare. The cloak worn by the Sandwich Islander is made of tapa, a traditional bark cloth that was once widely used throughout the Pacific Islands. Tapa was made by pounding the bark of the paper mulberry tree and then rubbing it with a pumice stone to make it smooth and pliable. The intricate patterns on the cloak were created by rubbing the cloth with various natural dyes and stains. The Sandwich Islands were first discovered by European explorers in the late 18th century, and the influence of European culture began to spread rapidly. However, the indigenous people continued to preserve their traditional customs and beliefs, which are still celebrated today. This photograph is a testament to the resilience and richness of the Sandwich Islander culture, which has survived the test of time and continues to inspire and captivate people around the world.
