EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts the Seychelles Stilt Palm, Verschaffeltia splendida, a native tree species of the Seychelles Islands in the Indian Ocean. The image is taken from the horticultural publication "Flowers of the Gardens and Hothouses of Europe" by Louis van Houtte and Charles Lemaires, published in Ghent, Belgium between 1862 and 1865. The Seychelles Stilt Palm is a tropical tree that grows up to 12 meters in height, with a slender trunk and gracefully arching fronds. The tree's most distinctive feature is its prop roots, which extend out from the base of the trunk and provide additional support, allowing the tree to grow in unstable or marshy soil. The Seychelles Stilt Palm is an important component of the unique ecosystem of the Seychelles Islands, providing food and shelter for various bird and insect species. The tree is also an iconic symbol of the islands' natural beauty and is featured on the reverse side of the Seychelles 10 Rupee banknote. This beautiful lithograph not only showcases the aesthetic appeal of the Seychelles Stilt Palm but also serves as an important record of the tree's appearance and characteristics in the mid-19th century. The intricate handcolouring adds depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a true work of art and a valuable addition to any botanical collection.
