EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph depicts a scene from the 14th century Spanish culture, as captured in the ceiling fresco paintings of the Alhambra Palace in Granada. The image showcases men in hunting attire, armed with spears and swords, in pursuit of a majestic lion. Accompanying them is a noble lady, dressed in an elegant gown, who watches the hunt with a sense of pride and admiration. The intricate details of their costumes reveal the richness and grandeur of the Spanish aristocracy during this era. The men's outfits consist of tunics, helmets, and suits of chainmail armor. The helmets are adorned with crests and plumes, while the chainmail suits provide protection against potential injuries. The men also carry large shields, which bear the emblems of their families or knightly orders. The lady's attire is equally stunning, with a voluminous gown that flows gracefully around her. She wears a surcoat, often worn over armor or a tunic, emblazoned with the insignia of her knight or lover. Her belt cinches her waist, and a breastplate adds an element of protection. Angels and other celestial beings are depicted on the pillows and other furnishings, reflecting the strong influence of religion during this time. This illustration was created by Dr. Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck, a renowned German museum curator, archaeologist, art historian, illustrator, and etcher. Hefner-Alteneck meticulously studied and documented various artworks and appliances from the Middle Ages to the 17th century, including those found in Ulrich von Landschad's grave in Steinach, Seinsheim, Sauwensheim, and Wurzburg Cathedral. His work, lithographed by C.R., provides an invaluable record of European history and fashion during this period.
