EDITORS COMMENTS
"This photograph, taken in 1868, showcases the remarkable progress of the Embankment project in London, which transformed the muddy shores of the River Thames into a grand public roadway. The image, captured on the central north side of the river, depicts a group of dedicated workmen diligently improving the embankment, which stretches from Westminster to Blackfriars, more than a mile and a half in length. At the time, this area along the Thames was notorious for its unsanitary conditions, with the muddy shores serving as a breeding ground for diseases during low tide. The embankment project, initiated in the mid-19th century, aimed to address these health concerns and improve the overall appearance of the city. The construction of the embankment not only provided a new roadway along the river but also allowed for the creation of new buildings, including the iconic Victoria Embankment Gardens and the Cleopatra's Needle. The photograph captures the industrious spirit of the workmen, who labored tirelessly to improve the public infrastructure of their city. The scene is a testament to the ingenuity and determination of the Victorian era, as well as the importance of public works projects in shaping the urban landscape. The embankment remains a cherished part of London's history and a symbol of the city's resilience and adaptability." Mary Evans Picture Library/Mary Evans Prints Online. Reproduced with permission.
