The artwork was created based on Captain Samuel Turner's account of his embassy to the Court of the Teshoo Lama in Tibet in 1800. The painting was later reproduced as a copperplate engraving by Dell Acqua and hand-colored by Lazaretti for Giovanni Battista Sonzogno's Collection of the Most Interesting Voyages (Raccolta de Viaggi Piu Interessanti) published in Milan between 1815 and 1817.
