EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, taken circa 1909 at the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes, Isle of Wight, Hampshire, we find two young British royal princes, the future King George VI and the future King Edward VIII, proudly wearing their naval cadet uniforms. The Duke of York, later King George VI, is depicted on the left, with a determined expression and his chest adorned with various medals and insignia. The Duke of Cornwall, later King Edward VIII, is seen on the right, gazing off into the distance with a thoughtful expression. Both princes were passionate about the sea and naval matters. Prince Albert, the second son of King George V and Queen Mary, joined the Royal Navy as a cadet in 1908, serving on several ships before being commissioned as a Sub-Lieutenant in 1911. Prince Edward, the eldest son of the Duke and Duchess of York, followed in his brother's footsteps and joined the Royal Navy in 1908, becoming a Midshipman in 1910. This photograph captures a moment in time when these future monarchs were still young men, learning the skills and discipline required to serve in the navy. The setting of Cowes, a popular sailing destination, adds to the sense of adventure and excitement. The image is a testament to the rich naval traditions of the British monarchy and the important role the sea played in the lives of these two princes. This photograph is a valuable historical record and a reminder of the close connection between the British royal family and the navy. It is also a poignant reminder of the changing of the guard, as both princes went on to succeed their father as monarch, with George VI reigning from 1936 to 1952 and Edward VIII from 1936 to 1937.
