EDITORS COMMENTS
Amid the chaos and hardships of World War II, the NaFI Alexander Club in Rome, Italy, stood as a beacon of comfort and relaxation for Allied soldiers. Housed in a former department store, approximately the size of London's Selfridges, the club was named after Harold Alexander, 1st Earl Alexander of Tunis, the Allied commander. The multi-story building, which included the Fountain Restaurant and Snack Floors, was a testament to the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the Allied forces. The heart of the club was an internal, roofed, open space on the ground floor, where a shimmering pool with goldfish and a magnificent fountain graced the center. Soldiers could take a break from the rigors of war and enjoy a meal or a snack at the Fountain Restaurant, or simply lounge by the pool, watching the water dance and listening to the calming sound of the fountain. The NaFI Alexander Club in Rome offered a much-needed respite for the weary soldiers, providing them with a sense of normalcy and camaraderie in the midst of the unfamiliar and often challenging conditions of wartime Italy. The club's facilities, including the Fountain Restaurant and Snack Floors, were a testament to the Allied forces' ability to adapt and create comfort and joy, even in the most unexpected of places. This photograph, taken circa 1944, captures a moment in time when the NaFI Alexander Club in Rome served as a vital source of morale and relaxation for the Allied troops. It is a poignant reminder of the resilience and determination of the men and women who served during World War II and the importance of finding moments of joy and connection amid the challenges of war.
