EDITORS COMMENTS
This image depicts Ahasuerus, also known as Xerxes I, the great King of Persia (486-465 BC). Born in 519 BC, Xerxes ascended the throne at the young age of 29, following the death of his father, Darius I. The name Ahasuerus, meaning 'God is help,' was the Persian form of his royal name. Xerxes is best known for his military campaigns against the Greeks, as recounted in the biblical Book of Esther. In the narrative, Xerxes issues a decree to annihilate all Jews in his empire, but the clever and brave Esther, a Jewish queen, manages to save her people. In this print, Xerxes is shown in a more personal and relaxed moment. He is depicted reclining on a sumptuous couch, surrounded by the luxuries of his Persian court. With a book in hand, he appears to be engrossed in its pages, perhaps seeking wisdom or knowledge. The night sky is visible through the open roof of his pavilion, adorned with stars, adding to the serene and contemplative atmosphere. Xerxes' reign was marked by grandeur and prosperity, with significant architectural and artistic achievements. His rule extended from Egypt to the borders of Greece, making him one of the most powerful monarchs of his time. This image captures the enigmatic and regal presence of Xerxes I, the great King of Persia.
