In the year 739 and 740, a significant event unfolded in the annals of European history as Pope Gregory III, the spiritual leader of the Christian world, dispatched grand delegations to seek military aid from Charles Martel, the powerful ruler of the Merovingian Franks in Gaul (present-day France).
