This evocative image captures the historic moment when Wittekind, the legendary leader of the Saxons, submitted to Charlemagne, the Frankish king, in the year 777. The scene unfolds at Attigny, a small town in present-day France, where Wittekind, also known as Widukind or Widuking, finally yielded to Charlemagne's relentless campaigns to bring the Saxons under his rule. Wittekind, a fierce warrior and a devout pagan, had long resisted the Frankish advances, leading several rebellions against Charlemagne's expanding empire. However, after years of conflict, Wittekind saw the writing on the wall and decided to seek peace. He arrived at Attigny with a delegation of Saxon nobles, bearing gifts and pledging allegiance to Charlemagne. In this print, Wittekind is depicted on bended knee before Charlemagne, symbolizing his submission. The Frankish king, dressed in regal attire and holding a scepter, looks down upon Wittekind with a stern yet compassionate expression.
