EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a Douglas R4D-8, military serial number 50772, also known as JM 772, from the United States Navy. The R4D-8 is a military variant of the iconic DC-3, with this specific aircraft originally serving in the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) under serial numbers 43-49092, 14908, and 26353. In the early 1950s, Douglas attempted to market the R4D-8 as the Super DC-3 to civilian customers, but unfortunately, sales were unsuccessful. The US Navy, however, recognized the potential of the upgraded R4D-5 and ordered the conversion of 100 existing R4D-5s to the Super DC-3 standard, making the Navy the only significant customer for this model. This R4D-8, with its new military serial number 43337, was modified and operated by the US Navy from September 1952 until June 1954. The aircraft is seen here in its military livery, showcasing the distinctive markings and insignia of the United States Navy. The R4D-8, a pivotal aircraft in the history of military aviation, represents the transition from World War II-era technology to the more advanced aircraft of the Cold War era. This photograph is a testament to the enduring legacy of Douglas Aircraft Company and the indispensable role of the R4D-8 in military aviation history.
