EDITORS COMMENTS
This print, titled "The Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment and Colours," showcases the evolution of uniforms and regimental colors of this esteemed British military regiment from the early 18th century to the early 20th century. Established in 1713, the West Riding Regiment, also known as the "Water and Meadows" or "Wellington's West Riding Regiment," has a rich history that spans over three centuries. The regiment's distinctive uniforms and traditions have earned it numerous nicknames and a unique place in the annals of military history. In the foreground of the print, we see soldiers from the 1713 period, dressed in red coats with white facings and black waistcoats, carrying muskets and wearing tricorn hats adorned with the Union Jack and the regimental badge of a sword in a scabbard. The regimental colors, displayed proudly, feature the St. George's Cross and the regimental crest. Moving forward in time, we come to the soldiers of the 1813 period, who wear the iconic "shako" helmets and red coats with white facings, black collars, and cuffs. Their uniforms also bear the distinctive "Wellington boots," named after the famous British military leader, who was the colonel of the regiment at the time. In the background, we see soldiers from the 1915 period, dressed in khaki uniforms, wearing steel helmets and carrying rifles. The regimental colors, now in the form of flags, bear the Union Jack and the regimental crest, which remains unchanged throughout the centuries. This print is a testament to the enduring traditions and rich history of the Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment, which continues to serve in the British Army to this day.
