EDITORS COMMENTS
Medusa: The Gorgon's Lethal Gaze, circa 1921 This evocative portrait sketch of Medusa, the mythological gorgon, captures the terror and fascination of the ancient Greek legend. Medusa's gaze, famously said to turn her victims to stone, is depicted here with piercing intensity. Her hair, a writhing bundle of snakes, adds to the sense of otherworldly menace. Medusa was a formidable adversary, feared and revered in equal measure. According to legend, she was once a beautiful woman, but was punished by the goddess Athena for her vanity. The god Poseidon then seduced her in Athena's temple, and when Athena discovered this betrayal, she transformed Medusa's beautiful locks into a mass of serpents. The hero Perseus, a demi-god and son of Zeus, was tasked with slaying Medusa. He approached her with the help of the goddess Athena, who shielded him from her gaze. Perseus then used his mirrored shield to reflect Medusa's reflection back at her, allowing him to behead her. Medusa's head became a deadly weapon, used by Perseus to defeat other monsters and protect the city of Argos. This sketch of Medusa, created circa 1921, is a testament to the enduring power of Greek mythology. The artist, Fernand Edmond Jean Marie Khnopff, masterfully captures the essence of the gorgon, her fearsome gaze, and the writhing snakes of her hair. This image, published in a magazine volume 15, August, adds to the rich tapestry of mythological art and storytelling. The use of color in this print adds depth and dimension to the image, enhancing the overall effect.
