Preface to Martial's Epigrammata by Merula

Two attached folios, paper, probably the endpaper and first leaf of a volume. Folio 1, which would have been the endpaper, has a number of small manuscript notes in Latin and some doodles on the recto and a note in a different hand about Methuselah son of Enoch who lived to the age of 969 years on the verso. Folio 2, which would have been the first proper leaf, has the manuscript text of the preface by Georgius Merula to his edition of Martial's Epigrammata, his dedicatory letter to Angelo Adriano. Text begins: Georgius Alexandrimus Angelo Adriano oratori Regio salutem'. In the lower left corner of f.1r there is a small fragment (approx 20x65mm) of another manuscript, likely a medieval binding fragment. Date: Late 15th Century

EDITORS COMMENTS
Auburn shades of parchment unfurl in this evocative image, revealing a tantalizing glimpse into the literary world of the late 15th century. The photograph showcases two attached folios, presumably the endpaper and first leaf of a once-bound volume. The first folio, now devoid of its original purpose, bears the remnants of a scholarly past. Small, meticulously penned Latin notes and whimsical doodles adorn the recto, while the verso reveals a note about Methuselah, the legendary son of Enoch, who is said to have lived an astonishing 969 years. The second folio, the proper first leaf, unveils the manuscript text of the preface by Georgius Merula to his edition of Martial's Epigrammata. The text begins with the salutation "Georgius Alexandrimus Angelo Adriano oratori Regio salutem," setting the stage for Merula's dedicatory letter to Angelo Adriano. A fragment of another manuscript, approximately 20x65mm, clings to the lower left corner of the first folio, a relic of a medieval binding. This duo of folios offers a rare peek into the rich history of manuscript studies, as well as the intriguing interplay between the scholarly annotations of the past and the enduring allure of classical literature. The late 15th-century provenance of these folios adds an air of mystery and intrigue, inviting us to delve deeper into the stories they have yet to share.
