Boeing 707-379C PP-VJK
Boeing 707-379C PP-VJK (msn 19822, line number 726) of VARIG (Viacao Aerea RIo-Grandense). First flown on 28 June 1968, VJK was delivered to VARIG on 4 November 1968. VJK crashed on take-off from Felix Hophouet Boigny International Airport, Abidjan, Ivory Coast on 3 January 1987, en-route to Rio de Janeiro-Galeao International Airport. The aircraft suffered a fire warning and during the return to the airport, the pilot stalled the aircraft in a turn and lost control; all but one of the 51 occupants died in the ensuing crash. This haunting print captures the tragic fate of the Boeing 707-379C PP-VJK, operated by VARIG (Viacao Aerea Rio-Grandense). First taking to the skies on 28 June 1968, this aircraft met its untimely end on 3 January 1987. While en-route from Felix Hophouet Boigny International Airport in Abidjan to Rio de Janeiro-Galeao International Airport, VJK experienced a fire warning that ultimately led to a fatal crash.
Despite the pilot's efforts to return to the airport after receiving the fire warning, control was lost during a turn and resulted in a stall. The devastating outcome claimed all but one of the 51 occupants aboard.
