EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases a Republic RF-84F Thunderflash jet aircraft of the Michigan Air National Guard, specifically 52-7412, assigned to the 171st Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron. The Thunderflash, a variant of the F-84F Thunderstreak fighter, was initially delivered to the United States Air Force (USAF) in January 1956 and saw service with various units, including the 805th Air Base Group, 2723rd Air Base Squadron, and the 15th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron (67th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing). In July 1971, 52-7412 was put into storage at the Aircraft Maintenance and Regeneration Center (AMARC) bone yard. The Thunderflash, a versatile and iconic aircraft of the 1950s and 1960s, was a critical component of the USAF's tactical reconnaissance fleet during the Cold War era. Its sleek design and powerful engines made it an effective platform for gathering intelligence and supporting ground forces. This photograph, taken circa 1963, captures the essence of aviation history and the Michigan Air National Guard's rich legacy in military aviation.
