EDITORS COMMENTS
In this vintage photograph, North American AT-6A NX61269, registered to a private owner at the time, takes to the skies with Hollywood actress and Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) member Dori Marland at the controls. The image, captured during the 1947 Halle Trophy race, showcases the sleek lines and powerful presence of the Texan trainer aircraft, which had been modified with a Ranger V-770 air-cooled inverted V-12 engine. The North American AT-6A, also known as the Texan or SNJ, was a popular advanced trainer used by the United States military during World War II and beyond. However, in the post-war era, some private owners sought to enhance the performance of their Texans by swapping out the standard Pratt & Whitney R-1340 Wasp engine for more powerful alternatives, such as the Ranger V-770. In this instance, the owner of NX61269, a Mr. Philpott, opted for the Ranger engine, which promised increased horsepower and improved performance. Dori Marland, an accomplished pilot and actress, was chosen to fly the modified Texan in the Halle Trophy race. Unfortunately, the aircraft did not complete the event. Despite the early setback, NX61269 continued to fly with the Ranger engine for some time before eventually reverting back to its original Pratt & Whitney powerplant. This photograph offers a unique glimpse into the post-war aviation scene, where private owners sought to push the boundaries of their aircraft and where skilled pilots like Dori Marland continued to make history in the cockpit.
