EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the United States Air Force's (USAF) Convair B-36A Peacemaker with the serial number 44-92015 (msn 12) taxying under its own power for the first time and delivering it to an operational unit at Carswell Air Force Base (AFB), Fort Worth, Texas on June 26, 1948. Amon G. Carter, a local businessman and philanthropist, was onboard the aircraft, hand-carrying a plaque dedicating the aircraft to the City of Fort Worth. The B-36A was the first of its kind to be delivered to an operational unit, marking a significant milestone in the history of the USAF's long-range bomber fleet. After serving with the 7th Bombardment Wing at Carswell AFB, the B-36A was later converted to an RB-36E-5-CF reconnaissance version and assigned to the 72nd Bombardment Wing at Ramey Air Force Base in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, in a Featherweight Configuration II. The aircraft was eventually transferred to the Military Aircraft Storage and Disposition Center (MASDC) at Davis-Monthan Air Base on September 17, 1956, and was ultimately scrapped. This photograph, taken circa 1950, is a testament to the history and evolution of the US military's strategic bomber fleet.
