EDITORS COMMENTS
In this historic photograph, newly elected Pope Pius XII, born Eugenio Pacelli, is crowned as the 262nd Pope of the Roman Catholic Church on March 2, 1939. The papal election took place following the death of Pope Pius XI on February 10, 1939. The conclave, a gathering of cardinals to elect a new pope, convened on February 2, 1939, and after several rounds of voting, Pacelli emerged as the clear frontrunner. The election was held amidst political turmoil, as Europe was on the brink of another major conflict. Pacelli, who had served as the Vatican's Secretary of State under Pius XI, was known for his diplomatic skills and his efforts to maintain the Church's neutrality in international affairs. He was also a strong advocate for religious freedom and the protection of human rights. The coronation ceremony took place in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City. In the photograph, we see Pacelli seated on the papal throne, wearing the papal tiara and holding the papal staff, as he is crowned by Cardinal Mariano Rampolla del Tindaro, the Dean of the College of Cardinals. The other cardinals look on, some in shock, others in awe, as the new pope is formally invested with the papal office. The election of Pius XII came at a critical moment in Church history. The world was about to be plunged into another devastating war, and the Church would face significant challenges in the years to come. But Pius XII was determined to lead his flock through the storm, and he would go on to become one of the most controversial figures in modern Church history. This photograph captures a moment of transition and hope, as the Church prepares to face the challenges of a new era. It is a reminder of the enduring power of faith and the resilience of the human spirit, even in the face of adversity.
