EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the moment of impact as Avro Canada CF105 Arrow I, registration number 25201, experiences an undercarriage failure upon landing on June 11, 1958. The Avro Arrow was a revolutionary jet interceptor aircraft, designed and built in Canada by Avro Canada. Known for its sleek and innovative design, the Arrow was anticipated to set new standards in aviation technology and performance. However, this incident during testing marked a significant setback for the program. The Arrow I, under the control of test pilot Brian Wood, was conducting a routine touch-and-go landing at Malton Airport in Ontario when the undercarriage collapsed upon touching down. The cause of the failure was later determined to be a design flaw in the main landing gear oleo scissor struts. The incident resulted in the destruction of the aircraft, but thankfully, Wood managed to escape unharmed. Despite the setback, the Avro Arrow program continued, with efforts to correct the design flaw and improve the aircraft's performance. However, the incident, along with other factors, ultimately led to the cancellation of the project in 1959. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the challenges and risks inherent in the development of advanced aviation technology.
