EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: The Rescue of Jules and Madame Duruof from the Sinking Balloon Le Tricolore, September 1, 1874 This print depicts an extraordinary event that took place on September 1, 1874, off the coast of England. Jules and Madame Duruof, French aeronauts, were attempting to cross the North Sea in their hot air balloon, Le Tricolore, when a sudden loss of altitude left them stranded in the frigid waters. The image captures the moment of their rescue by local fishermen, William Oxley and his second, as their small boat approaches the distressed couple. Mrs. Duruof is being carefully helped into the boat by the fishermen, while her husband clings desperately to the sinking basket of their balloon. The determination and compassion of the fishermen are evident as they reach out to save the pair from the treacherous sea. In the background, a larger fishing vessel or sailboat is making its way towards the scene, no doubt to offer further assistance. The Duruofs' balloon, which had been carried away by the wind after their rescue, was eventually located in the Skagerrak. This print, created between 1870 and 1880, is a testament to the ingenuity and perseverance of the early aviators, as well as the kindness and bravery of the local fishermen who came to their aid. The print, titled "Sauvetage du ballon Le Tricolore Monte par Monsieur et Madame Duruof, naufrages sur les cotes d'Angleterre, et recueillis par le patron William Oxley et son Second du Port de Grimsby, le 1er Septembre 1874," is an intriguing glimpse into the history of early ballooning and the human spirit's ability to overcome adversity.
