EDITORS COMMENTS
Sebastiano del Piombo, also known as Sebastiano Luciano (1485-1547), was an Italian Mannerist painter of the High Renaissance period. This stunning portrait depicts one of the most influential figures of the Italian Navy and Genoese military and political leader, Andrea Doria. Painted in oil on canvas, the portrait showcases the mastery of Sebastiano del Piombo's technique and his ability to capture the essence of his subject. Andrea Doria, born in 1466, rose to prominence as a naval commander in the service of the Republic of Genoa. He became a formidable military leader, and his victories against the Ottoman Turks and the Spanish fleet earned him a reputation as one of the greatest admirals in history. Doria's political influence extended beyond the military, and he played a significant role in Genoese politics, serving as the Doge of Genoa from 1528 to 1535. This portrait, created in the late 16th century, is a testament to the enduring legacy of both Sebastiano del Piombo and Andrea Doria. The artist expertly captures the intensity and determination in Doria's gaze, conveying his strength and leadership qualities. The rich, dark background emphasizes the sitter's presence, drawing the viewer's attention to the intricacies of his clothing and the subtle details of his facial features. The portrait is now part of the collection at the Aisa (Fondazione Magnani Rocca) in Piacenza, Italy, and is an essential addition to the study of both Renaissance art and the history of military leadership. The import of this work lies in its ability to encapsulate the spirit of the era and the remarkable individuals who shaped it.
