The production of Sherlock Holmes, penned by Arthur Conan Doyle, first premiered in England at the Shakespeare Theatre in Liverpool on September 2nd, 1901, and later transferred to the Lyceum Theatre on the 9th of the same month. Gillette's touring production then graced the Kings Theatre in Edinburgh on August 19th, 1903. Gillette's theatrical portrayal of Sherlock Holmes left a lasting impact on audiences, making him synonymous with the character.
