He was a brigadier in the Salerno landings in 1943 and won the M.C. in 1917 as a battery commander, and was President of the Society of Antiquaries and Secretary of the British Academy. The Roman civilization was his particular subject, and he was Professor of Archaeology of the Roman Provinces in the University of London until 1955

EDITORS COMMENTS
Sir Mortimer Wheeler: Archaeologist, Broadcaster, and Champion of Ancient Civilizations This evocative portrait captures Sir Mortimer Wheeler, the renowned archaeologist and broadcaster, in deep thought at his desk in the British Academy. With a pipe clenched between his teeth and a stack of papers before him, Wheeler exudes the intellectual intensity and quiet determination that defined his distinguished career. Born in 1890, Wheeler's passion for archaeology began in childhood and was nurtured through his military service during World War I, where he earned the Military Cross as a battery commander in the Salerno landings in 1943. His expertise in the Roman civilization led him to become Professor of Archaeology of the Roman Provinces in the University of London until 1955. But it was through the medium of television that Wheeler truly made his mark, bringing the meaning of archaeology and a knowledge of the antique to a wide and eager public. With his presence and infectious enthusiasm, Wheeler became one of the brightest stars of early television. He was also a respected leader in the academic community, serving as President of the Society of Antiquaries and Secretary of the British Academy. Wheeler's legacy extends far beyond the academy, leaving a lasting impact on our understanding and appreciation of the ancient world. This portrait is a testament to a life dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and the sharing of history with the world.
