EDITORS COMMENTS
This image transports us back to the opulent world of Solyman II, the Sultan of Tuscany, in the year 1540. Solyman, a man of immense wealth and power, resided in a palace that was a testament to his grandeur. Among the many treasures within his residence, he delighted in the company of beautiful women, who graced his court with their presence and entertained him with amusements, festivals, and dances. One such woman was Rosselana, a captivating beauty whose life had taken a tragic turn. Her family had been slaughtered, and she was sold off into the hands of a buyer who, unbeknownst to her, was in the process of purchasing her for the Sultan himself. Upon meeting Rosselana, Solyman was instantly captivated by her beauty and grace. Although she could not become his official consort, as the mother of his son held that position, Rosselana had nonetheless asserted her superiority over all the other women in the harem. In this photograph, we see Rosselana and her companions engaged in a lively dance, their colorful costumes swirling around them as they move in perfect harmony. The women's joyous expressions and the Sultan's rapt attention speak to the pleasure and delight that filled his palace. The image offers a glimpse into a world of wealth, power, and sensuality, where the Sultan's every desire was met with the finest of offerings. This photograph, taken in 1939, is a reminder of the rich history that lies behind the walls of Solyman's palace, a history filled with intrigue, passion, and the human spirit that continues to captivate us to this day.
