EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning 15th-century architectural masterpiece, known as the Cordons House or Palace of the Constables of Castile, is located in the heart of Burgos, Spain. Built between 1460 and 1474 by Juan de Colonia and his nephew Simon de Colonia, this magnificent structure served as the official residence of the Constables of Castile, high-ranking military officials in the service of the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon. The intricately designed facade of the Cordons House is a testament to the rich artistic and architectural heritage of Castile and Leon. The Great Franciscan Stone Cord, a distinctive feature of the building, adorns the balcony of the facade. This impressive structure, which measures over 10 meters in length and weighs approximately 25 tons, was carved from a single piece of limestone. The cord symbolizes the military order of the Knights Templar, to which the first Constable of Castile, Alonso de Sotomayor, belonged. The Cordons House is a prime example of the Gothic and Plateresque architectural styles that flourished during the late Middle Ages in Spain. Its ornate decorations, including intricate carvings and sculptures, reflect the artistic influences of the time. The building's grandeur and beauty have endured through the centuries, making it a must-see attraction for visitors to Burgos and a source of pride for the people of Castile and Leon. The Cordons House stands as a reminder of the rich history and cultural heritage of Spain, and is a testament to the artistic and architectural prowess of the Colonia family and the Catholic Monarchs. Its intricate design and stunning beauty continue to captivate and inspire visitors from around the world.
