EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful image captures the moment of arrest for suffragette Grace Watney Rose, also known as Grace Roe, in May 1914. The photograph shows Grace being led away by police officers after a raid on the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) headquarters at Lincolns Inn House. Grace, along with other suffragettes, was charged with conspiracy for their activism in the fight for women's suffrage. Following her arrest, Grace was held in prison from May 23rd. In protest of her imprisonment, she went on hunger strike and endured the painful and inhumane practice of forcible feeding. The government eventually granted an amnesty on the outbreak of World War I, and Grace was released on August 10th, 1914. Grace Watney Rose was born in 1885 and was a dedicated suffragette, risking her freedom and personal wellbeing to fight for women's rights. Her arrest and subsequent imprisonment were part of a larger movement that saw thousands of suffragettes take to the streets and engage in civil disobedience to demand the right to vote. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by suffragettes during the suffrage movement in the early 20th century.
