EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the enigmatic and brooding visage of Torquato Tasso (1544-1595), one of the most celebrated Italian writers of the Renaissance period. Born in the northern Italian city of Bisceglie, Tasso is best known for his epic poem "Gerusalemme Liberata" (Jerusalem Delivered), which tells the story of the First Crusade and features the legendary knight Tancred and the sorceress Armida. Tasso's literary prowess was evident from an early age, and he was educated at the University of Bologna before entering the service of the powerful Gonzaga family in Mantua. However, his poetic talents and his passionate nature often led him into trouble, and he was confined to a mental institution for several years due to a dispute with the Duke of Ferrara over the dedication of his poem to the Duke's wife. Despite this setback, Tasso continued to write and was eventually reinstated in the Gonzaga court. He spent the remainder of his life in relative obscurity, but his work continued to be read and admired by generations of poets and scholars. In this photograph, Tasso's intense gaze and furrowed brow suggest a man deep in thought, perhaps pondering the complexities of human emotion and the power of the written word. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of this great Italian poet and the profound impact of his work on the literary world.
