EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking portrait captures Thomas Earl of Clarendon, also known as Thomas Villiers, at the age of 47 when he held the title of Lord Hyde. Born on November 1, 1628, Clarendon was an English statesman, diplomat, and historian, who served under King Charles II. He is best known for his role as Lord Chancellor from 1660 to 1667 and 1672 to 1673, during which time he played a significant role in the restoration of the monarchy after the English Civil War. Despite his political successes, Clarendon's tenure as Lord Chancellor was marked by controversy and conflict, particularly with the Duke of York and the Duke of Buckingham. In 1667, he was impeached and dismissed from office. However, he was later reinstated in 1672, only to be dismissed again in 1673. After his political career, Clarendon turned to writing history, producing a multi-volume work on the history of the English Civil War. He was created Earl of Clarendon in 1661 and Marquess of Dorchester in 1665. This portrait, painted in 1709, shows Lord Hyde in a formal attire, with a serious expression and piercing gaze. The artist has captured the sitter's intelligence and intensity, reflecting the complex and eventful life of this influential historical figure. The portrait provides a glimpse into the past, offering a glimpse into the life and legacy of Thomas Earl of Clarendon, a man who played a pivotal role in English history during a time of great political upheaval.
