Plate 118 from William MacGillivray's Watercolour Drawings of British Animals (1831-1841) features a captivating illustration of the winter wren, Troglodytes troglodytes, in its winter plumage. The small, brown bird is perched on a rocky outcrop, its long, curved beak pointed intently towards the ground, and its bright eyes fixed on some unseen prey. The winter wren is a passerine, or perching bird, belonging to the order Sauropsida and the class Aves. MacGillivray's meticulous attention to detail is evident in the anatomy of the bird, with its short, round body and long, striped tail feathers. The winter wren is one of the smallest birds in Europe, measuring only about 10 cm in length. Despite its diminutive size, it is a robust and agile creature, well-adapted to life in rocky, wooded habitats. This illustration captures the winter wren in its daytime habitat, outside among the rocks and branches. The winter wren is a year-round resident in the British Isles, and can be found in a variety of woodland and scrub habitats. It is a solitary bird, and pairs are often heard but not easily seen.
