Born into the noble Villiers family, William's lineage can be traced back to the ancient Anglo-Saxon dynasty of the Dykes or Dijks. His father, Sir Henry Villiers, was a prominent courtier and politician who served as Lord Chamberlain under King James I. William's own political career began in earnest when he was appointed as a Gentleman of the Bedchamber to King Charles I in 1625. However, it was his relationship with the future Duchess of Cleveland, Barbara Palmer, that would forever etch his name into the annals of history. The exact timeline of their affair is uncertain, but it is believed to have begun in the late 1630s. Their scandalous liaison, which continued even after Barbara's marriage to George Villiers, 2nd Duke of Buckingham in 1637, caused a sensation at the English court and led to a bitter feud between the two dukes. Despite the controversy, William's influence at court remained strong, and he was appointed Lord Chamberlain in 1638. However, his fortunes took a turn for the worse following the outbreak of the English Civil War in 1642. He was imprisoned in the Tower of London in 1642 and later executed in 1643 after being implicated in a plot to assassinate the Parliamentary leader, Sir Thomas Fairfax.
