EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph showcases the historic steam yacht, Lancashire Witch, built in 1878 for the esteemed Sir Thomas Hesketh. The Lancashire Witch, a magnificent vessel of its time, later became the property of the renowned explorer, Frank Linsly James, in the late 1880s. James, an intrepid adventurer, met his untimely end in April 1890 during an expedition in West Africa, following an encounter with a wounded elephant. Subsequently, the Lancashire Witch was acquired by the Royal Navy in 1893, and was renamed HMS Waterwitch. The ship was utilized for survey work, contributing significantly to the naval organization's efforts in mapping and understanding the world's waters. Tragically, the HMS Waterwitch's seafaring journey came to an end in 1912 following a collision in Singapore Harbour. This photograph, taken around the turn of the century, captures the essence of a bygone era, encapsulating the grandeur and adventure of a time when steam-powered vessels reigned supreme on the world's oceans. The Lancashire Witch's rich history serves as a testament to the spirit of exploration and innovation that characterized the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This evocative image offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when the world was still being discovered, one wave at a time.
