The Skegness Cure, original artwork for GNR poster, 1911

Watercolour painting, the original artwork for a Great Northern Railway (GNR) poster entitled The Skegness Cure, produced by GNR to promote rail travel to Skegness, Lincolnshire. The man in the picture with a bandaged foot has become so invigorated by the bracing air of Skegness that he has sprung out of his wheeled chair and is pulling it along, with his attendant now seated in it, as he skips along the beach. Artwork by John Hassall (1868-1948), the first great railway poster artist. After twice failing to gain a commission at Sandhurst, he emigrated to Manitoba, Canada, but later returned to England, where he started his own art school called the New Art School and School of Poster Design

The Skegness Cure - A Whimsical Escape to Seaside Bliss

EDITORS COMMENTS
. This print showcases the original artwork for a Great Northern Railway (GNR) poster entitled "The Skegness Cure" created by the renowned artist John Hassall in 1911. The watercolour painting depicts a heartwarming scene that captures the essence of rail travel to the charming coastal town of Skegness, Lincolnshire. In this delightful image, we witness a man with a bandaged foot who has experienced an astonishing transformation thanks to the invigorating air of Skegness. Bursting with newfound energy and vitality, he joyfully propels himself forward by pulling his wheeled chair along the sandy beach. To our amusement, his attendant now finds himself comfortably seated in this once indispensable contraption. John Hassall's artistic brilliance shines through as he masterfully portrays not only the physical rejuvenation but also the sheer exuberance that can be found amidst nature's embrace. As one of Britain's first great railway poster artists, Hassall expertly conveys both beauty and whimsy in this enchanting composition. It is worth noting that after facing setbacks early on in his career, including failed attempts at gaining admission into Sandhurst military academy and emigration to Canada, Hassall returned to England where he established his own art school called the New Art School and School of Poster Design. This remarkable piece serves as a testament to both Hassall's talent and GNR's commitment to promoting leisurely
