EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the charming village of Mitchell, St Newlyn East in Cornwall, circa 1957. The focal point of this image is the magnificent Pillars Hotel and Raleigh House, standing proudly across the road. On the left side, we see The Pillars Hotel, a Grade II listed farmhouse that exudes history and character. Built in 1683, its age is evident from the timber panel over its entrance door which displays a date marking its construction. This architectural gem stands as a testament to Cornwall's rich heritage. To the right stands Raleigh House, another Grade II listed treasure dating back to the 17th century. Its timeless beauty adds to the allure of this picturesque scene. Mitchell itself has an intriguing past; it was once known as St Michael or Meideshol before adopting its current name. Notably, Sir Walter Raleigh represented this very borough in the House of Commons during parliament's gathering on February 19th, 1593. Captured by photographer Charles Woolf with his keen eye for detail and composition, this photograph beautifully showcases both architectural marvels against a backdrop of Cornish countryside. With hints of columns and elements reminiscent of classical architecture found throughout Cornwall's historic sites like Newquay nearby, this print serves as a stunning reminder of our region's cultural significance
