Bald eagles silhouetted against a full Moon
Full Moon. Two bald eagles, Haliaeetus leucocephalus, in a tree which is silhouetted against a full Moon. The Moon does not produce its own light, but it can be seen because it reflects the light of the sun. The Moons dark areas, or seas, are the remains of ancient plains of lava. The Moons mass is unevenly distributed and Earths gravity pulls the heavy parts more strongly than it does the lighter parts. This means that the Moon does not spin freely and that the heavier half always faces towards Earth. The bald eagle lives in North America and feeds on fish. Photographed in British Columbia, Canada

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic beauty of two bald eagles silhouetted against a full Moon. The ethereal glow of the Moon, which does not emit its own light but reflects the sun's rays, creates a stunning backdrop for these iconic birds. As we gaze at this image, we are reminded of the intricate connection between Earth and its celestial companion. The dark areas on the Moon's surface represent ancient lava plains, remnants of a distant past. Its uneven mass distribution causes Earth's gravity to exert varying forces on different parts of the Moon, resulting in a lack of free spin and always presenting us with one side. The bald eagle, native to North America and known for its regal presence, finds solace in this serene setting as it perches atop a tree branch. With their keen eyesight and powerful wingspan, these magnificent creatures thrive by feeding on fish from nearby waters. Photographed in British Columbia, Canada by Science Photo Library, this remarkable image captures not only an awe-inspiring moment but also serves as a reminder of our place within the vastness of space. It invites us to appreciate both the natural wonders that surround us here on Earth and those that extend far beyond our planet's boundaries into the realm of cosmology and planetary science.
