Coloured SEM of barbules on a swallow feather
Feather barbules. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of barbule hooks on a feather from a swallow, (Hirundo sp.). The flat broad vane of a feather is formed by comb-like rows of filaments called barbs, which project from either side of a central shaft. Each barb has rows of minute filaments called barbules, the barbules on one side bear hooks, while those on the other have a groove. The arrangement is such as to hook adjacent barbs together, interlinking the whole structure. Thus the feather is strong yet flexible and light, making it ideal for flight. EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of a swallow feather at an astonishing level of detail. The coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) reveals the mesmerizing structure of barbules on the feather's surface. Each barbule is composed of rows of tiny filaments, resembling a comb-like formation that extends from the central shaft. What makes this arrangement truly remarkable is that one side of each barbule bears hooks, while the other side features grooves. This ingenious design allows adjacent barbs to interlock with one another, creating a strong and flexible vane for flight purposes. The entire structure combines strength and lightness, making it ideal for birds' aerial movements. The magnification used in capturing this image was x844 at 5x7cm size or x2,050 at 7x5 inch size, enabling us to appreciate every minute detail present on these delicate feathers. It serves as a testament to nature's incredible craftsmanship and adaptation.
